MORE OPT TO SHOP ONLINE

Where did you do your last shopping spree? If you find yourself doing more of your purchases online, you’re not alone.

Late last year, a PayPal survey done by GfK showed that 1,000 Malaysians aged 18 and above who participated in the poll prefer to do their holiday shopping on the Internet.

According to Digital News Asia, it appears that the major reason for this is that consumers want to make better use of their time. This translates to desiring to “spend more time with their family” or pursuing other worthwhile activities.

Klas Hesselman, marketing head of PayPal in South-East Asia and India, commented on the results with the following observation:

“Instead of shopping at overcrowded retail malls and battling traffic and carpark jams, savvier and smarter Malaysian consumers are choosing to shop online and on mobile devices to simplify one of the craziest shopping seasons of the year.”

“Besides saving money, Malaysian shoppers can use online and mobile shopping to get back 36 hours of their precious time for what the holiday season is supposed to be about -- spending more time with family and friends, relaxing and celebrating the end of a great year,” he said in closing.

According to the survey, a whopping 81% would rather spend the time with family, while 69% think it’s better to exercise or get involved in a hobby. On the other hand, 53% of those polled prefer to hang out with friends.

The study also surveyed shopping pet peeves. Taking the top spot is the problem of finding vacant parking lots at 67% while long lines at checkout counters take second place at 65%. At third is having to deal with the crowds, 50%. It has also been found that only 40% of those surveyed are patient enough to wait 5-10 minutes at a queue in a retail shop.

It is also worth noting that tablet PCs and smartphones are the gadgets of choice for online shopping, with 47% of those polled choosing these options. Desktops rank third at 18%, while laptops are the second most popular alternative at 34%.

So, where did you last shop? If it’s online, count yourself as one of those modern, efficient, and tech-savvy shoppers mentioned in the survey!
